Mr. Greenberg discussed his book, Nixon’s Shadow, published by W.W. Norton. He examined Richard Nixon as a twentieth-century cultural icon, asserting that Nixon was the “first post-modern president” because he was the first whose image was strategically manipulated for political reasons. He contends that understanding Nixon requires that his many images -- “tricky Dick,” victim, conspirator and statesman, -- be assembled and viewed as components of the whole character. However, the author felt that Watergate prevented President Nixon from creating a successful persona to counteract his “tricky Dick” reputation. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions. close
