Robert Katz, a journalist and author who has lived in Italy since 1967, talked about the World War II story behind his book, The Battle for Rome: The Germans, The Allies, The Partisans, and the Pope, September 1943-June 1944, published by Simon and Schuster. The book recounted the nine-month German occupation of Rome, from the fall of Mussolini through the Nazi occupation to the liberation by Allied forces. Based on recently declassified information, including documentation from papal archives, the book provided insight into Pope Pius XII’s decision not to intervene in the massacre of 335 Roman men and boys in the Ardeatine caves. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience. close
