U.S. Policy Toward Iran
The committee met to review the United States policy toward Iran. After opening statements the committee recessed for voting before hearing the testimony of Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.
Despite some signs of reform in recent years, Iran continues to pose a serious regional and global security threat through its active support of terrorism, its continued effort to develop weapons of mass destruction in direct violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and it efforts to undermine coalition efforts to rebuild Iraq. The United States is also concerned by the political, religious and gender repression perpetrated by the ruling clerics on their own people.
