Governor Wilder addressed the first convention of the Democratic Leadership Council, a conservative group of elected Democratic local, state, and national government officials and lobbyists for special interest groups, on the Democratic party’s outlook for the presidential campaign in 1992. The goal of the Council is to create a new ideological “mainstream” position for the Democratic party that will reinvest traditional Democratic values into the party and attract disillusioned Democratic voters. Gov. Wilder described “America’s new mainstream,” and recited the Council’s solutions to the failed policies of the leading Republican party. He called for the Democrats to cut $25 billion from the Federal budget in the next two years, to mandate no repressive tax hikes for the middle class, and to maintain a strong and fair trade policy. close
