Gov. Clinton introduced delegates to speak before the Democratic Leadership Council’s first convention on new initiatives in government. The Democratic Leadership Council is made up of elected state, local, and national government representatives and lobbyists for special interest groups, whose collective purpose is to reinvigorate the Democratic party with a more “mainstream” ideology that will encourage middle class voters to identify with the party. Ms. Karpan introduced the “New Choice Resolution,” a document recording the principles of the Democratic Leadership Council, including new initiatives for social programs concerning private choice, personal and public responsibility, and concentration on education and health care. Rep. McCurdy, a man with a “conservative head and a liberal heart,” seconded the resolution. Finally, delegates spoke from the floor to introduce amendments to the resolution. Debate centered around the inclusion of language concerning racial quotas, which, since Republicans are using the term “quotas” to attempt to defeat the 1991 civil rights bill, some delegates thought should be phrased differently. Sen. Robb spoke after the adoption of the resolution. close
