Margaret Edds talked about her book, An Expendable Man: The Near-Execution of Earl Washington Jr., published by New York University Press. The book chronicles the long battle to exonerate Earl Washington, Jr., who was wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to death. After spending a number of years on death row, Washington was pardoned and released when DNA testing proved his innocence. Additional speakers at this event are Bob Hall, Washington’s attorney; Wayne Smith, president of the Justice Project; and Kirk Bloodsworth, a former death row inmate and the first prisoner in the United States to be exonerated using DNA evidence. The speakers urged reform of the U.S. justice system. They also responded to questions from the audience. close
