Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Herbert Donald talked about his book, We Are Lincoln Men: Abraham Lincoln and His Friends, published by Simon and Schuster. In the book, the author explores the friendships of Abraham Lincoln and their influence on his presidency and history in general. Mr. Donald draws on Aristotle’s categories of friendship, asserting that Lincoln had many “pleasureable” and “useful” friendships, but few “perfect” ones. In his analyses of six friendships throughout Lincoln’s life, Mr. Donald suggests that Lincoln’s lack of close friendships hampered his ability to manage the secession of the southern states. Following his presentation, the author responded to questions from the audience. close
