Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD), joined by industry and consumer advocates, requested that the Department of Agriculture institute country-of-origin labeling for meat and possibly other food products. If implemented, the rule would mandate that all meat sold in grocery stores be labeled with the country where the animal was born, raised, and processed. Although country-of-origin labeling was not a new idea, it received additional support after a cow in Washington state tested positive for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, better known as mad cow disease. Following prepared remarks, the officials responded to questions from reporters. close
