Todd DePastino talked about his book, Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America, published by University of Chicago Press. In the book, the author works to explain the origins of homelessness in America. He documents the story of the homeless men who began moving around the country in large numbers following the Civil War, as well as the changing face and definition of homelessness. According to Mr. DePastino, the word “tramp” was introduced into the American lexicon during the Civil War to describe a long march. The author also talks about the evolution of the words “hobo” and "bum". He discusses the subculture of homelessness and its influence on the social fabric of the United States. Following prepared remarks, Mr. DePastino responded to questions from the audience. close
