Secretary Ball, member of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission, spoke to the Business Executives for National Security, a nonpartisan group of business executives interested in maintaining a strong U.S. defense. The Business Executives for National Security had re-released a report earlier in the day on the economic consequences of the closure of military bases on the communities surrounding the bases. The military base closings are part of the Department of Defense’s plan to reduce the manpower in the U.S. military 25 percent by 1996. Concern has been raised by localities surrounding bases slated for closure about the loss of jobs, reduction of land value, and problems with hazardous waste that may accompany the closure of a base. Secretary Ball discussed the process by which the military base reduction is being carried out, and responded to questions from members of the audience. close
