Panelists talked about the future of social security. They discussed Saving Social Security: A Balanced Approach, co-authored by Mr. Diamond and Mr. Orszag and published by the Brookings Institution. In the book, the authors present a plan to save social security through a combination of tax increases and benefit cuts. They identify increasing life expectancy, income inequality, and legacy debt as the primary causes of the long-term social security deficit. The authors presented the main points of their book, which were subsequently debated by the panel. Following the discussion, panelists responded to questions from the audience. Mr. Hassett moderated the panel. close
