Massachusetts legislators met in a joint session for a constitutional convention to debate an amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The debate was prompted by a decision and clarification by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court instructing the legislature to recognize same sex unions. On this day two amendments were offered and defeated that would establish civil unions for same-sex couples.

The constitutional convention will meet again tomorrow. close
