A panel of the 2004 USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum focused on changes in the meatpacking industry, especially following the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalitis in the United States. Topics addressed included the state of the industry, the trend toward vertical integration, new regulations and the animal identification system, and procedures that were followed after the discovery of mad cow disease. After their presentations the panelists answered questions from members of the audience. close
