Following the presentation of the colors by Princeton University ROTC members, President Tilghman introduced Secretary Powell to an audience largely made up of students. Secretary Powell praised Ambassador Kennan as the author of the post-World War II policy of containment. Topics included Kennan’s career that encompassed being a witness, shaper, and interpreter of U.S. history. Also mentioned were the fall of the Soviet Union (as predicted by Kennan 45 years earlier), events during President Reagan’s term of office, the September 11, 2001 attacks, globalization, the Iraq War, and war on terrorism.

The occasion was the George Kennan Centennial Conference honoring his 100th birthday. Ambassador Kennan, Emeritus Professor for the Institute of Advanced Study, was not able to attend the conference.

After his speech Secretary Powell was presented with the inaugural Crystal Tiger Award for public service. close
