Author James Shreeve speaks about his book, The Genome War: How Craig Venter Tried to Capture the Code of Life and Save the World, published by Knopf, to an audience at Politics and Prose in Washington D.C. In the book, Mr. Shreeve documents the race between private firms and government research labs to successfully map the human genome. In 1998, Craig Venter formed Celera, a private company dedicated to unraveling the complete genetic code of humans. Venter’s intent was to complete the task in three years, which would have put his firm years ahead of the projected completion of the government-funded Human Genome Project. Mr. Shreeve examined the conflicts and cooperation between scientific and business interests. After his presentation, Mr. Shreeve responds to questions from the audience. close
