Peter Galison talked about his book, Einstein’s Clocks, Poincare’s Maps: Empires of Time, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The book recounts the attempts of two scientists to synchronize clocks during the late 19th century. One of these scientists was Henri Poincare, president of the French Bureau of Longitude. The other was a little-known physicist at the Bern Patent Office in Germany, Albert Einstein. Mr. Galison explains that both men ultimately faced the question of whether time was absolute or relative, but only Einstein would use the research as part of the basis for the theory of relativity. Following prepared remarks, Mr. Galison responded to questions from the audience. close
