George Washington University Hospital officials talked about the condition of Attorney General John Ashcroft. He underwent surgery earlier that day. The attorney general had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of gallstone pancreatitis. The doctors said that Ashcroft’s long-term prognosis was excellent, but refused to make more specific comments in order to protect patient confidentiality.
