Officials talked about their plans to combat obesity in America. Recent studies projected that obesity would soon overtake tobacco as the number one cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Among the initiatives recommended were public relations campaigns to encourage exercise and healthy eating habits; encouraging or mandating the inclusion of calorie and other nutritional information in restaurant menus; development of healthier foods; continued research into obesity; and altering food labeling requirements. A poster was used to illustrate proposed changes to labels. Following prepared remarks, officials responded to questions from reporters. close
