Mr. Meier talked about his book, Pain Killer: A “Wonder” Drug’s Trail of Addiction and Death, published by Rodale Press. In the book, the author tells the story of the development, testing, approval, and use of Oxycontin. The drug, an analgesic derived from opium, was originally introduced to help cancer patients and others living with severe and chronic pain. However, Oxycontin grew popular among addicts, who abused the drug to get high. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience. close
