President George H. W. Bush nominated Colin Powell to continue in his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In doing so, the president expressed his confidence in Colin Powell as chairman, lauded his performance during his term as chief, and refuted reports that claimed Colin Powell objected to President Bush’s decision to send U.S. troops into Iraq during the buildup towards the Persian Gulf war. General Powell accepted the nomination, expressing his pleasure at being asked to continue during a time of change in the U.S. military. He would not comment on rumors concerning his objections to the use of force in the Persian Gulf war. President Bush then responded to questions from reporters on various policy issues, including plans for a summit meeting in the summer of 1991 and the London economic summit. close
