The American Society of Newspaper Editors held a forum during their annual meeting focusing on the First Amendment in American culture. Dennis Barrie, director of the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, was arrested and acquitted on charges of obscenity for exhibiting six sexually explicit photographs as part of a showing of the works of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Reverend Donald Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, has led a fight against the pornography industry, including efforts to keep pornographic magazines out of convenience stores. The panel discussed the case against Mr. Barrie, federal funding of sexually explicit art, and the balance of First Amendment rights against obscenity in American culture. close
