The convention sponsored by the 21st Century Commission on African-American Males sought to propose changes in American social policies to aid economically disadvantaged black males, who all too frequently are caught up in a culture of violence that prevents their rise from poverty. The forum entitled, “Alternatives to the Criminal Justice System,” discussed proposals to end the increasing number of black males involved in the criminal justice system. Panel members voiced their opinions on the root causes for the violence many black males are involved in, and gave proposals for ending the cycle of violence involving black males, many of which concerned educational programs for both black culture and academic disciplines. close
