The House Budget Committee heard testimony on the state of the nation’s transportation systems. Earlier in 1991, the Bush administration released its proposal for the improvement of the nation’s transportation infrastructure, which emphasized alternative transportation methods other than the nation’s overloaded highway system. Given the deteriorating state of the nation’s roads and mass transportation, witnesses testified on alternatives to rebuilding the highway, bridge and road systems that would move people quickly and efficiently. The current transportation system costs the U.S. money: $30 billion dollars are spent due to transportation delays in U.S. urban centers every year. Other topics discussed include energy consumption and passenger safety, especially relevant given that one of four U.S. bridges is structurally unsafe. close
