The first Capital Book Festival was hosted by the Fairfax County Public Library Foundation in its tenth anniversary year.

The panelists talked about the polarization of politics. Issues discussed included where the polarization came from, whether it is a matter of concern, whether the quality of the national debate has deteriorated, and if political writers can contribute to improving the political process. After their discussion the panelists answered questions from members of the audience. Larry Sabato, Director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, moderated the discussion. Participants were Eleanor Clift wrote Founding Sisters and the Nineteenth Amendment, published by John Wiley and Sons. Alan Colmes wrote Red, White and Liberal: How Left Is Right and Right Is Wrong, published by Regan Books.
