Mr. Rothstein and Mr. Strasser talked about the significance of the Supreme Court’s denial to hear U.S. v. Oliver North. Oliver North was convicted on charges of altering and destroying documents, accepting an illegal gratuity, and aiding in obstructing Congress. Oliver North, a former Marine Lt. Colonel, and National Security Council staff member was sentenced to three years suspended prison term, two years of probation, and $150,000 in fines. The Court of Appeals overturned the shredding of documents but ruled that the trial judge must review North’s Congressional testimony, line by line, to determine if North’s trial was influenced by testimony he had given to Congress. For testifying before Congress, Oliver North was granted immunity, thus guaranteeing that resulting testimony could not be used against him in his trial. Mr. North appealed his trial decision, contending that testimony from his appearances before Congress had influenced the outcome of the trial. close
