Coinciding with the dedication of the National World War II Memorial the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage held a four-day “Tribute to a Generation: National World War II Reunion” on the National Mall in a series of tented pavilions and stages. One of the tents was called “Wartime Stories.” In the panel titled “Behind Enemy Lines” two veterans told the stories of their adventures after being shot down. Mr. Medina joined a band of Italian partisans. Former Governor Whitcomb was captured by the Japanese but managed to escape. After their reminiscences they answered questions from members of the audience.

Mr. Medina published his memoir Ciao, Francesco in 1995. Former Governor Whitcomb’s memoir is titled Escape from Corregidor. close
