Author Spencer Lane talked about his book, First World Flight: The Odyssey of Billy Mitchell, published by U.S. Press. The book is largely a biography of General Billy Mitchell. Following his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1898, Mitchell rose quickly through the ranks and was placed in command of U.S. Army aviation in 1916. He set numerous aviation records. He became a decorated war hero for his role in coordinating air attacks during World War I. After the war, the general worked tirelessly to advance the capabilities of the U.S. military, especially in the area of aviation. In 1924, a team of U.S. airmen, organized by Mitchell, made the first flight around the world. In the book, Mr. Lane also addresses the relationship between General Mitchell and his colleagues and superiors. Mitchell loudly and persistently criticized the military for a lack of preparedness, and was ultimately court-martialed for insubordination. close
