Mr. Achenbach talked about his book The Grand Idea: George Washington’s Potomac and the Race to the West, published by Simon and Schuster. In the book Mr. Achenbach examined George Washington’s plan to transform the Potomac River into a commercial highway, connecting the East and West. Mr. Achenbach explained that the plan was based in Washington’s concerns that the Union would be divided between East and West.
