America and the Courts features two American Bar Association events with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy. On June 12th, Justice Anthony Kennedy helped to dedicate the ABA’s new headquarters in Chicago. The event was delayed one day by the funeral of President Ronald Reagan, who appointed Justice Kennedy to the Supreme Court in 1988. In August 2003, at the ABA’s annual meeting in San Francisco, Justice Kennedy gave a keynote address in which he asked the association for recommendations on the state of federal sentencing and incarceration in U.S. prisons. The Justice Kennedy Commission released its report on June 23, 2004 in Washington, D.C., holding that the U.S. justice system relies too heavily on incarceration and needs to consider more effective alternatives. close
