Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende addressed the opening plenary session of the European Parliament, outlining his goals for Europe. He talked about European security, the new EU constitution, and Turkey’s interest in joining the EU.

Prime Minister Balkenende is starting a 6-month term as president of the European Council (the main decision-making body in the European Union). The European Parliament convened in Strasbourg, France following June elections across Europe. There are now 732 members of the European Parliament, including 162 representatives from 10 new member states. close
