The Harlem Book Fair on Saturday, July 24 was located on West 135th Street between Lenox Avenue and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard in New York City. Panel discussions were held in the Langston Hughes Auditorium in the Schomburg Center

One panel was called “Narratives of a Black Life: Memoir and Biography.” The panelists, who had written about their own lives or about relatives, discussed the inspirations for their narratives, the place in history of their subjects, the writing process and the problems of deciding what to reveal. They responded to questions from members of the audience.

Panelists included: Ilyasah Shabazz, author of Growing Up X, published by One World; Susan Fales-Hill, author of Always Wear Joy: My Mother Bold and Beautiful, published by HarperCollins; Victor Woods, author of A Breed Apart: A Journey to Redemption, published by Atria; and Stephanie Stokes Oliver, author of Song for My Father: Memoir of an All-American Family, published by Atri close
