Former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich talked about the book he co-authored, Grant Comes East: A Novel of the Civil War, published by St. Martin’s Press. He talked about why he decided to write novels about the Civil War and explained the background work that goes into creating what he called “active history,” which he described as a fictional account guided by historical facts and biographical material. Mr. Gingrich also gave an overview of the plot and discussed the Battle of Gettysburg, the subject of his first Civil War novel. After his presentation, he answered questions from members of the audience.
