Professor and author Elizabeth Leonard talked about her book Lincoln’s Avengers: Justice, Revenge, and Reunion After the Civil War, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The book tells the story of the aftermath of President Lincoln’s assassination. The author spoke about U.S. Army lawyer Joseph Holt, who was in charge of the investigation and trial of the conspirators involved in President Lincoln’s death. She detailed Holt’s struggle to bring everyone involved in the plot to assassinate Lincoln to justice and the problems he faced in this task. She explored the relationship between the investigation and Reconstruction. close
