Following launch on August 8, 2001, the Genesis spacecraft headed towards an orbit around L1. The location chosen by NASA as a point between Earth and the Sun where the gravity of both bodies is balanced. The spacecraft would collect particles of the solar wind and after two years, then return the samples to Earth. The mid-air capture by helicopter of the return capsule was scheduled for September 8, 2004. close
