The Defense Base Closure and Realignment commission continued deliberations on the list of U.S. military bases proposed for closure by the Department of Defense. The closures are part of the plans of the Department of Defense to reduce the manpower of the U.S. military 25 percent by 1996. In addition to the original 43 bases proposed for closure by Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, the commission added 36 military bases to the list of proposed closures in order to keep their options open. The commission, originally appointed by President Bush, has until July 1 to present their recommendations on closures to the president. Eventually, Congress must vote on the entire group of proposed closures in a single yes or no vote. Deliberations centered around direct comparisons of the advantages and disadvantages of each military base slated for closure. The commission members discussed military laboratories and Air Force, Army and Navy divisions. close
