The committee heard testimony on S. 1227, the health care and cost containment plan entitled "Health America", introduced by Senate Democrats. Witnesses specifically discussed health care issues facing the American family, including prenatal and infant pediatric care and long-term care for the elderly. Mr. Califano explained the intent behind the Health America bill, which is to spend the $750 billion spent on health care in the coming year by controlling increasing health care costs and providing insurance to all Americans. He cited statistics stating 25 percent of all the money spent by Americans on health care is wasted on such expenditures as unnecessary operations and unwieldy administrative costs. A ten percent reduction in health care costs would free $20 billion for American business. He emphasized the necessity for America to reform its health care program in order to compete in international markets. close
