Representative Gephardt, the candidate for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, spoke before the Women’s National Democratic Club on the state of the Democratic party in 1991. Responding to criticism that the Democratic party does not have the ability to win the presidency in 1992, Rep. Gephardt called for a return to the “sense of adventure” that marked the Democratic successes in the 20th century. Rejecting protectionism as a means to improve America’s competitiveness in world markets, he advocated making American workers more productive through improving education opportunities for all Americans. close
