This panel featured two women who have written memoirs. Barbara Robinette Moss grew up with an alcoholic and abusive father in rural Alabama. She writes about leaving behind the poverty of her youth and young adulthood to pursue her dream of becoming a visual artist in her two memoirs, Change Me into Zeus’s Daughter: A Memoir] and Fierce: A Memoir, both published by Scribner.

Nancy Steinbeck was married to the late John Steinbeck IV, son of the author of The Grapes of Wrath and other literary classics. John Steinbeck IV served in the Vietnam War as an Army journalist and eventually became a highly respected war journalist. John Steinbeck IV died in 1991. Nancy Steinbeck combined portions of her late husband’s unfinished autobiography with her own writing in composing The Other Side of Eden: Life With John Steinbeck, published by Prometheus Books. close
