Witnesses testified before the committee on “529” savings plans. These plans are “state sponsored investments that are designed to encourage families to save money for their children’s college education.” These savings plans are eligible for special tax treatment under the federal tax code. Witnesses discussed the types of investments used in these plans, the problems associated with these investments, and the role of federal securities laws in these state-sponsored plans. The witnesses responded to questions from committee members. close
