The Asia Society’s Washington Center sponsored a forum on the elections in India. The elections, held over three non-consecutive days of voting, began May 20 but were interrupted by the assassination of Congress party leader and Indian President Rajiv Gandhi on May 21. The elections were postponed until further voting took place June 12 and June 15, with the final results to be known on June 22nd. Forum participants discussed the conduct of the elections, and their impact on India’s economy and relations with other countries. The speakers in the forum discussed continuing Hindu-Muslim violence in India, the makeup of the Indian parliament, and the state of the Congress party in India following the death of its leader. close
