Mr. Sharansky and Mr. Dermer spoke about their book, The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror, published by Public Affairs. They discussed the spread of democracy and related it to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Middle East peace process. Mr. Sharansky spoke about his experiences as a translator for a Soviet dissident and his time in a Soviet gulag. He spoke about the relation between freedom and moral necessity and argued that Israel has acted repeatedly to guarantee Palestinian human rights and freedoms. He argued that democratic nations must act quickly to prevent the rise of dictatorships. Following their remarks, the authors responded to questions from members of the audience. close
