Adam Hochschild talked about his book Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire’s Slaves, published by Houghton Mifflin, about the first mass movement to abolish slavery. Beginning his story in late 18th century England, Professor Hochschild told the story of how and where the ideas to challenge the institution of slavery were developed and described what inspired the men involved. He also talked about slave revolts that occurred in Haiti and Jamaica during this time and their role in ending slavery in the British Empire. Professor Hochschild’s talk was accompanied by a visual presentation. He also answered questions from members of the audience following his remarks. close
