Ana Marie Cox delivered the keynote address at the Online News Association annual conference. As editor of the political blog wonkette.com, she offered her opinions and perspectives during the 2004 presidential campaign at her website and she discussed the campaign year during her address. Topics included the CBS Dan Rather/ National Guard story, the conventions and debates, and the daily stories from the presidential campaign trail.

Ms. Cox talked about the web log, or “blog,” she wrote during the 2004 election. One of the bloggers responsible for the spread of misleading exit poll data, she said that she posted the numbers without really worrying about their accuracy but to present them to the public. She focused her comments on the watchdog role of bloggers in the media. However, she said that bloggers were not necessarily journalists and they do not adhere to the standards and practices of journalists. She argues that bloggers deserve a role in criticizing and commenting on the news, but will not replace traditional journalists and should not be held to the same standards. To her, blogs are just a medium, and for many of their authors they are simply a step on a path to another job. close
