Luncheon Honoring Senator Mikulski
The Women’s Legal Defense Fund honored Sen. Barbara Mikulski at their twentieth anniversary luncheon. The Women’s Legal Defense Fund was organized in 1971 to promote issues of importance to women, including family leave legislation and anti-sex discrimination legislation. Sen. Mitchell lauded Sen. Mikulski for her work on medical care for women and children, and said Congress would repeal regulations stating doctors in family planning clinics funded under the Title X program could not mention abortion as an alternative for their pregnant patients. Sen. Mikulski discussed the people who helped her in her efforts to help families, women and children in America, including Sen. Mitchell and the Women’s Legal Defense Fund, and discussed legislation affecting women in America such as the Civil Rights bill and Title X regulations. She also discussed the Equal Rights Amendment, and vowed to carry on the purpose of the defeated legislation. close
