The Republican National Committee, headed by former Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter, met in Houston, Texas to hold their annual meeting. During the afternoon business session, Rep. Vander Jagt, chairman of the Republican Campaign Commission, welcomed the Republicans to Houston. He discussed eight words that help define America and the relationship between the American government and the American people: “We, the people,” "by his Creator," and “pursuit of.” Other speakers continued to laud the vision of the Republican party as it leads the country into the 1990's and beyond. Sen. McConnell, the only Republican challenger in 1984 to defeat a Democratic incumbent, spoke on campaign finance reform, which he said was unnecessary since most Americans want the government to leave them alone. The committee also conducted business concerning the 1992 Republican National Convention, to be held in Houston. close
