Governor Romney was the featured speaker at the Spartanburg County Republican Party Presidents Day fundraising dinner, which many political analysts described as the kickoff for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination campaign. South Carolina was expected to host the first Southern primary in the 2008 presidential campaign and Governor Romney has been mentioned as a possible candidate. The event also featured South Carolina House Speaker David Wilkins as the Master of Ceremonies, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, and South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson. Among the topics addressed were Republican Party values and policy agenda, and the focus of government spending and regulation.
