Clayton Yeutter, former Secretary of Agriculture and current chairman of the Republican National Committee, spoke on the prospects for the Republicans in the elections of 1992 to an audience at the 1991 Washington Conference of the National Grocers Association. Speaking about the redistricting occurring in states throughout the nation, Mr. Yeutter said the increase in districts would result in a greater number of contested races in a number of states. He was optimistic about the Republicans' chances to recover from recent losses in the House and Senate in the new districts, and said previous redistricting efforts were slanted against the Republican party. He also said regaining control of the Senate would be crucial to the Republican party in 1992. In responding to questions following his speech, Mr. Yeutter named a number of Democratic senators he considered vulnerable in 1992 because of their “wrong” votes concerning the President’s use of force in Iraq before the Persian Gulf war. close
