The Atlantic Council of the U.S., a non-profit center for policy development for democracies around the world, held a conference on the future of the NATO alliance following the end of the Cold War. The forum on “Future Force Structures and Arms Control Process,” examined recommendations of the new military force structures members of the NATO alliance should maintain in response to the changing strategy employed by the alliance following the breakup of the Warsaw Pact. The panel also examined how arms control agreements enter into the new equation in the NATO alliance. The discussion included issues such as the START arms control agreements, CFE 1A and 2, SNF talks, the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and arms control agreements on chemical weapons. close
