The Senate continued consideration of S. 1241, to control crime and reduce violent crime. The Mitchell (D-ME) and Hatch (R-UT)/Thurmond (R-SC) amendments were adopted. The D’Amato (R-NY) amendment 382, to permit prosecutors to seek the death penalty if a firearm that has been transported through interstate commerce is used to commit a murder, was adopted, as was the Specter (R-PA) amendment 384, to require specific audits, and the Symms (R-ID) amendment 377, to impose capital punishment for drug-related homicides in the District of Columbia. The Helms Amendment 378, regarding race-related employment practices, was rejected. The Specter (R-PA) amendment 381 was pending. A unanimous-consent agreement was reached providing for the consideration of certain amendments to be proposed to the bill.
