They were expected to take the oath of office and elect a speaker and two deputy speakers. The assembly will also write a new Iraqi Constitution and oversee the operations of government until the Constitution is ratified. Not all of the 275 members attended the session and no leaders were elected.

The members of the Iraqi National Assembly, elected on January 30th,held their first meeting since the deposition of Saddam Hussein’s government. They heard opening speeches from Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi and from Kurdish and Shiite leaders.
They were expected to take the oath of office and elect a speaker and two deputy speakers. The assembly will also write a new Iraqi Constitution and oversee the operations of government until the Constitution is ratified. Not all of the 275 members attended the session and no leaders were elected.
