They heard opening speeches from Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi and from Kurdish and Shiite leaders.
They were expected to take the oath of office and elect a speaker and two deputy speakers. The assembly will also write a new Iraqi Constitution and oversee the operations of government until the Constitution is ratified. Not all of the 275 members attended the session and no leaders were elected.
